Why businesses in Spain need a website: ecommerce, SEO and GEO
Understand what a website adds to social media, when to build an online store, and how development, SEO and AI search connect to useful enquiries and sales.

A business website gives customers reliable information and a way to enquire or buy. Social platforms support discovery and conversation; a corporate site explains the offer; an online store processes purchases. SEO helps search engines discover and understand those pages. GEO concerns how information is presented for generative AI search. Plan them around the same customer journey.
Before commissioning web development in Spain, define what a visitor should be able to do. That decision changes the structure, budget and acceptance criteria.
Why have a website alongside Instagram and WhatsApp?
These channels can work together. Social posts share news and start conversations. A website provides information organised by topic: services, location, working process, products and contact details. A campaign can link to the relevant page rather than making customers search old messages for specifications or terms.
For example, a service business in Madrid might explain its scope and quotation process. A wholesaler might need a browsable catalogue and product enquiries. These are illustrative requirements, not Nexoflux client results or conversion promises.
A new business may only need a small set of clear, maintainable pages. Booking tools, customer accounts and private areas should have a practical purpose and someone responsible for operating them.
Corporate website, online store or marketplace?
A corporate website introduces the company, explains services and receives enquiries. An online store on your own domain adds products, cart, payments, shipping, orders and after-sales operations. A Shopify store can meet that definition; owning the customer-facing domain does not mean every component must be built from scratch.
A marketplace shop operates within a platform's rules and can coexist with an independent store. Your own store gives more control over presentation and experience, while also requiring acquisition, maintenance and operating plans. Launch alone does not generate visits or sales.
- For sales through quotations, start with service explanations and enquiries.
- For products with defined pricing and delivery, evaluate an online store.
- For trade customers with individual prices, specify B2B rules first.
- For an existing physical shop, establish which system owns products, stock and orders.

How development and SEO should work together
SEO starts before adding copy to a finished design. Identify customer questions: what the business offers, who it serves, how it works, what a quotation needs and how to make contact. Then create pages that answer those questions.
A web development service page addresses a different need from a product category. Putting every keyword on the homepage cannot replace those explanations. Creating near-identical pages for many cities also adds little value when there is no distinct information to offer.
A practical sequence is:
- Give each page a defined purpose and useful content of its own.
- Write descriptive titles and concrete explanations without invented results.
- Keep important text and links crawlable; check HTTP status and indexing settings.
- Plan canonical URLs, sitemap entries and relationships between languages.
- Test mobile reading, navigation and forms.
- After launch, review Search Console and the quality of incoming enquiries.
Google's localized page guidance explains hreflang. These references identify language alternatives; they do not replace complete content in each language.
What changes for ecommerce SEO?
Categories help customers choose a type of product. Product pages explain a specific item through attributes, images, uses and availability. Content needs to reflect real operations. If the store advertises stock that cannot be delivered, the immediate problem is inventory and order handling.
Customers and crawlers should be able to follow navigation from categories to products. Google's ecommerce site structure guide explains the role of internal links. A sitemap supports discovery without replacing navigation.
Filters, sorting and variants may create several URLs. Decide which pages have independent value and plan indexing and canonical handling, following the considerations in Google's ecommerce URL guidance. Product structured data should match visible pricing and stock. A page offering store development should not impersonate a physical product listing.
What is GEO, and what can you actually do?
GEO generally describes organising content for generative search. Useful work includes stating who the business is, where it operates and what it offers; answering questions directly; supporting specialised facts with sources; and linking related pages.
For “Can my store share stock with my POS?”, start with the conditions: review APIs, permissions and limits, then agree stock ownership and sync behaviour. That helps a reader make a decision and understand what must be checked.
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use the usual SEO foundations and do not require special AI files or markup. An llms.txt file can be maintained as a supplementary reading index, but does not guarantee visibility or citations. See the official AI features documentation. Other assistants independently decide whether to crawl, use or cite pages.
Spanish and Chinese websites for businesses in Spain
Your language for working with a supplier and your customers' languages are separate choices. Chinese support can help a Chinese business owner communicate requirements; serving local customers still calls for clear Spanish product, service and delivery information. Add English where it serves an actual audience.
Each version needs maintainable content, working contact links and consistent facts. Switching language should preserve the equivalent page where available. Company identity, location and scope should agree across versions, without invented offices, reviews or cases.
Nexoflux works from Madrid on projects in Spain with English, Spanish and Chinese support. Site architecture and translations should reflect those facts and the agreed service scope.
Measure usefulness as well as visits
Separate discovery, understanding and completion:
- Search: impressions, clicks, queries and indexing in Search Console.
- Enquiries: useful contacts and their requested services, distinct from button clicks.
- Sales: cart, checkout, payment and orders, without duplicate purchase counting.
- Costs: maintenance, hosting, apps, payment fees and integrations.
Installing Google Tag Manager does not configure GA4 or conversions by itself. Analytics should respect consent and exclude names, email addresses, phone numbers and message contents from event parameters. Compare meaningful observation periods before attributing a change to SEO.
What to prepare before asking for a proposal
List your business, customers, main visitor action, languages, existing site and domain access. For ecommerce, add products, variants, markets, shipping, payments and ERP or POS systems.
Ask suppliers to separate design, development, content, migration, integrations, licences and maintenance. Acceptance should cover mobile journeys, forms or purchases, accounts, required redirects and data checks. Legal and commercial terms require their own review; a template does not establish that every obligation is covered.
Frequently asked questions
Does a new business need a complex website?
Not necessarily. Start with business information, the main services and a clear enquiry path. Add features when there are concrete needs and owners who can maintain them.
Is SEO complete when a website launches?
No. Check indexing, update information and fix usability issues. Publishing does not guarantee rankings or orders.
Does an online store require custom development?
Not always. Shopify can cover standard workflows. B2B rules, particular experiences or integrations may justify custom development after comparing ongoing costs and restrictions.
Do SEO and GEO require separate websites?
Usually not. Accessible pages, accurate information and useful answers serve readers and search systems. Selection and citation depend on each system.
